Watteau rarely made drawings as studies for specific paintings, but this vigorous study of a satyr with two wineskins is an exception. It relates directly to a series of paintings of the Four Seasons, now lost but recorded in prints, commissioned for the dining room of his patron Pierre Crozat. The paintings were intended to be viewed from below, which dictated the curve of the satyr’s body and his intense downward gaze. The drawing is executed in Watteau’s signature trois crayons technique. This combination of red, black and white chalks relates closely to works by Rubens.
Notes
A study for 'Autumn', a now-lost oval painting, one of a series of the Four Seasons commissioned by Pierre Crozat for the dining room of his house. The date has been much debated but c. 1717 was proposed by Hattori 2001 and accepted by Rosenberg and Prat 2011.
Provenance
From Rosenberg and Prat 1996: mounted by François Renaud (active late 18th - early 19th centuries), L. 1042 (lower right); Jean-Antoine Vassal de Saint-Hubert (1741-1782); his sale, Paris, 23 March-17 April 1779, possibly part of lot 94; possibly Jules-Robert Auguste, Paris (1789-1850) (as Goncourt 1875, p. 366 said Baron Schwiter acquired a number of drawings at Auguste's May 1850 sale, which is confirmed by the annotated catalogue at the V&A, but the catalogue does not go into enough detail to identify the drawings); possibly his sale, Hôtel Drouot (Paris), 28-31 May 1850, lots 100-103 (lots are not described); if so, purchased there by Baron Louis-Auguste de Schwiter (1805-1889), L. 1768 (lower left), by 1875; his sale, Hôtel Drouot (Paris), 20-21 April 1883, lot 165; purchased there by Henri Michel-Lévy, Paris (1845-1914) (annotated catalogue from RKDH on Brill); his sale, Galerie Georges Petit (Paris), 12-13 May 1919, lot 116, repr. (35,000 francs); purchased there by Adrien Fauchier- Magnan (1873-1965); his sale, Sotheby's (London), 4 December 1935, lot 66, repr.; purchased there by Count Antoine Seilern (1901-1978); Princes Gate Bequest 1978

Inscriptions
Watermark: Watermark: upper centre: small banner containing “P?C”; Countermark: lower centre: unclear single line, forming perhaps letter “B”? Drawing in file suggests it could be a foot or hand (though the countermarks are very different, first part of the mark matches Heawood 2987 – Paris 1674).
Stamp: Recorded in 1981 condition report: Mount, Verso: 'Ausfuhr' stamp, if the same as on other drawings in the collection it is a blue export stamp reading 'von der zentralstelle für denkmalschutz zur ausfuhr freigegeben".
Inscription: none.
Collector's mark: Recto: lower left corner, partially stamped, in blue: Louis-Auguste de Schwiter (L.1768); lower right corner, blindstamped: François Renaud (L.1042).
