pen and brown ink, brown wash on laid paper, with brown ink framing lines, prepared with a brown wash (Rijksmuseum is investigating Rembrandt's corpus of 'toned' papers to see how many are intentional, but his finished landscapes do tend to be on brown paper, per presentation given by Ilona van Tuinen and Leila Sauvage at 2020 symposium. Here the verso is starkly whiter, and under the microscope, added pigments are visible in the recto paper fibres).

From the later 1640s landscapes formed an important part of Rembrandt’s drawn oeuvre. This view of the village of Diemen, bathed in sunlight, records the environs of Amsterdam, which the artist explored on foot. The high degree of finish suggests that the drawing was executed in the studio. However, only the delicately applied brown wash seems to be original, whilst the greyish tone, in places insensitive to the fall of light, was probably added later, a practice common in the 18th century.

Provenance

Jan Pietersz. Zoomer, Amsterdam (1641-1724), L.1511 [according to Lugt, possibly an associate of Rembrandt's son Titus]; Valerius Röver, Delft (1686-1739), L.2984a-c; purchased from his widow by Hendrik de Leth, 22 January 1761 [according to Lugt]; purchased from him by Johann Goll van Franckenstein, Amsterdam (1722-1785), L.2987 [according to Lugt]; by descent to his son, Pieter Hendrik Goll van Franckenstein, Amsterdam (1750-1821); his estate sale, dir. J° de Vries, A. Brondgeest, E. M. Engelberts and C. F. Collection Goll 1833') [copy on Brill is annotated but the buyer's name is illegible]; Dr F. Heimsoeth, Bonn [according to 1898 catalogue]; his estate sale, F.A.C. Prestel (Frankfurt am Main), 5-8 May 1879, lot 149; purchased there by Dr August Sträter, Aix-la-Chapelle (1810-1897), L.787; his estate sale, H.G.
