This figure has been linked to Rembrandt’s most famous etching, 'Christ Preaching' of 1647-9, known as ‘The Hundred Guilder Print’ for its spectacular price tag. In the print, a man utilizes a similar pose to indicate a crowd of infirm figures waiting to be healed by Christ. This preparatory drawing focuses on the man’s profile and distinctive gesture. Flexible lines delineate the costume and upper body, while the legs are only hastily suggested.

Provenance

John Rushout, Lord Northwick (1769-1859); his estate sale, Sotheby’s (London), 1-4 November 1920, lot 175 and 5-6 July 1921, lot 97 (pasted together with D.1978.PG.181); purchased there by Henry Scipio Reitlinger, Maidenhead (1882-1950); his estate sale, Sotheby's (London), 22 June 1954, lot 691 (still pasted together with D.1978.PG.181); purchased there by Colnaghi (London); purchased there by Count Antoine Seilern, London (1901-1978), 13 July 1954 (£650, for both); Princes Gate Bequest 1978
