The scholar at work was a popular subject in Rembrandt’s circle in the 1630s. The more delicate and controlled use of the pen in the scholar’s face establishes a sense of focussed concentration. This quiet atmosphere is undermined by the somewhat clumsy reworking of the figure’s left arm and the use of choppy lines to render the foreground curtain, indicating that the drawing was not executed by the master draughtsman Rembrandt, but rather someone in his circle.
Provenance
Lord John Somers (1650-1716); his estate sale, Remy (Paris), 10-13 December 1759, part of lot 279 ('Treize dessins de Rembrandt & Ecole'); Hagen (? per verso inscription); M.H. Speelman (? per verso inscription); H.J. Bhabha, London; Arthur Goldschmidt (Paris); purchased from him by Count Antoine Seilern (1901-1978), 1959; Princes Gate Bequest 1978

Inscriptions
Watermark: none.
Inscription: Recto: lower left corner, graphite: “h.”. Verso: lower centre, graphite, William Clarke's hand (former Courtauld conservator) so likely transcribed from a frame or mount that he removed in 1983: “Colln of John Lord Somers 1652-1716. / S Paris Dec 10th 1769. [should be 1759] / Hagen / M.H. Speelman Colln”; lower right, graphite, modern hand: “KTN-”.
Collector's mark: ? Recto: lower left, stamped in black: D, looks similar to François Desmarais (L.3358) but is smaller. The drawings of Desmarais did not leave their album, dated 1729, until their sale in Paris in 1984, so the provenance above precludes that.
