This sheet was one of 11 claimed to be by infamous British forger Eric Hebborn (1934–1996). However, recent provenance research has revealed this drawing was sold at auction in 1936, when Hebborn was only two years old. Therefore, he cannot be the author of this sheet.

Provenance

Sir Gilbert Frankland Lewis, Worcester (d. 1883) [in his family for ‘nearly a century’, according to article in the Times, 3 February 1936]; by descent to his nephew Sir Henry Duff-Gordon, Aberdeen (1866-1953); his sale, Sotheby's (London), 19 February 1936, lot 67 (as 'Statue of Apollo with various figures in adoration'); purchased there by Reed (name annotated in sales catalogue); M. Bernard (London); purchased there by Colnaghi (London), 13 December 1957; purchased there by Count Antoine Seilern (1901-1978), 14 January 1958 (£200); Princes Gate Bequest 1978
