From 2023 display La Serenissima: Drawing in 18th century Venice:
This spirited vignette depicts a bull baiting staged in Saint Mark’s Square during the visit of Archduke Paul Pavlovich and Archduchess Maria Feodorovna of Russia in January 1783. Guardi made at least three sketches of this colourful event, two of which are in The Courtauld’s collection. They may be preparatory studies for a painting, even though no such work is now known. The immediacy of the drawing suggests that Guardi probably sketched the scene from life.

Notes
There are two other drawings of the bull-baiting that took place in the Piazza di S. Marco, which was held to celebrate the visit to Venice in January 1782 of the Grand Duke Paul Pavlovitch and Grand Duchess Maria Deodorovna of Russia (Courtauld D.1978.PG.139 and MET 11.66.12), though no corresponding painting is known to exist. It is also unclear if it was 1782 or 1783, as on the Venetian calendar the first three months of the new year were considered part of the old year and dated as such.
