From 2023 display La Serenissima: Drawing in 18th century Venice:

Guardi portrayed Mark, patron saint of Venice, in the midst of writing his Gospel, his eyes upturned in search of divine inspiration. The painterly application of the brown wash on the saint’s eyes conveys a feeling of ecstatic rapture. The cursive lines and fluttering contours are typical of Guardi’s late works.

The drawing may have been conceived as part of a set of the Four Evangelists accompanied by their respective symbols, as the lion, sketchily drawn at the lower right, seems to suggest.

Provenance

part of a two-volume album belonging to the Archbishop of Belluno (according to Ongania); after his death passed "to other hands" (according to Ongania); Ferdinando Ongania, Venice (1842-1911), by 4 May 1878 (his letter in the file); Count Wodinski (Polish, d.c. 1934 in Spain, according to Ritchie); by descent to his step-daughter's son, Jan R. Ritchie (as related to J. Byam Shaw, his letter in the file); purchased from him by Colnaghi (London), 2 May 1950 (they dismantled the album); purchased there by Count Antoine Seilern, London (1901-1978), 17 May 1950 (£75); Princes Gate Bequest 1978
