Provenance

purchased from the artist by G. Scrivens, Esq., Sussex, n.d.; by descent to his daughter, Miss Scrivens; given by her to Miss Rhoda Welsford, London (1894-1975), around 1924; Welsford Bequest 1969 The former mount for D.1976.XX.5 (Sion, Switzerland) and D.1976.XX.6 (Brig, Switzerland) recorded that G. Scrivens purchased them at the artist's estate sale at Southgate's Galleries, Wellington, Stroud, for £4.4.0; however, Southgate's Galeries were located on Fleet Street in London, and it appears that the artist's estate sale took place at Sotheby's. There are 3 lots in the Sotheby's sale in which a drawing of Sion and a drawing of Brig were sold together, though none sold for £4.4.0 - this based on the catalogue on Brill annotated with the prices. The BM apparently has a catalogue annotated with the names of the buyers, so that will need to be checked to verify whether Scrivens actually bought these drawings at Sotheby's and the annotater of our mount was mistaken; or perhaps the buyer at Sotheby's was Southgate, who then sold them on to Scrivens.
