Turner has envisaged this dramatic cloudburst in terms of shape and pattern. Silhouetted in sunlight, a dark roll cloud hangs over the sea, dispensing a torrent of rain on the waves. Horizontal bands of blue-grey, yellow and red indicate depth, and the play of light on the water and sand. Watercolour, gouache and chalk merge imperceptibly into one medium, the heavily worked gouache indicating that the work might have been finished indoors.
