Lake Lucerne and its surroundings were favourite subjects for Turner on his Swiss tours of the 1840s. The town of Brunnen is located on the north-eastern shore of the Bay of Uri, famous for its jade-blue waters. Turner creates a translucent effect in this watercolour, skilfully laying shades of blue over wet yellow washes. Several of the Lucerne sketches were developed into ‘sample’ studies to attract commissions for larger finished watercolours. The Courtauld sheet is close in style to a later ‘sample’ study but it was not executed as a finished work.
