William Henry Hunt was one of several notable watercolourists who attended the informal ‘academy’ run by the physician and collector Dr Thomas Monro in the Adelphi Terrace and was a frequent guest at his country house near Bushey, Hertfordshire. Much of his early work was carried out in the surrounding area. Here he has chosen to draw in the nearby small town of Watford. Chickens and a pig roam in the dust between ramshackle houses, the effect more rustic than urban.
