Notes

Gian Lorenzo Bernini shows Saint Jerome in a pose of extreme remorse, collapsed over the cross and about to beat his chest with a rock. Bernini depicts the saint in dynamic swathes of drapery and denies the saint's face to the viewer. The exact purpose of this work is unknown; he donated similar drawings to fellow artists and friends, but the modest dimensions of the sheet could indicate that it was for personal use. Spiritual subjects such as this may have been used as devotional imagery during prayer or as an act of redemption by Bernini himself, who immersed himself in religion later in life. Bernini represented the saint in a few other works, including a drawing (Louvre Museum, Paris, inv. 9575) where the saint kneels in front of the cross, facing the viewer, which he offered to Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683); and a large marble sculpture in the Chigi Chapel of the Siena Cathedral, where the saint is standing and holding the cross in his arms.
