Label Text

Around 1812 William Turner established himself as a drawing master in his native Oxfordshire. He had earlier studied with John Varley who encouraged him to work from nature out of doors. This watercolour of the quarries at Shotover, three miles east of Oxford, was probably made on the spot. The informal nature of the sketch is reinforced by the panoramic format, shorn of any flanking elements. Strong white and green bodycolour in the foreground contrasts with the paler watercolour in the sky.
