The historic Austrian town of Bregenz, with its ancient churches and monasteries perched dramatically over Lake Constance, provided Turner with a gratifying amount of subject matter. For lake and river scenes he often used sheets of blue paper, leaving areas of sky and water untouched, as in this expressive colour sketch, executed with economy of line to the point of abstraction in the foreground. Accents of pink and white gouache perfectly describe the bright sunlight cast over rooftops.

Notes

In late summer of 1840 Turner returned to the Continent, landing in Rotterdam and traveling up the Rhine. He stopped briefly at Bregenz before continuing on to Venice.
