This expressive work belongs to a group of fifty watercolours deriving from Turner’s 1817 Rhine journey that he sold to Walter Fawkes for £500 on his return. As with many of these works, almost all based on pencil sketches, Turner has viewed the legendary Drachenfels (Dragon’s Rock) in the middle distance from a low vantage point on the opposite bank, allowing the overhanging cliffs to dominate. Constantly experimenting with techniques, he has here used comb-like accents on the rocks with a dry brush and added finger marks to the cliff side to create the effects of stone.

Provenance

commissioned by friend and patron of the artist, Walter Fawkes, Farnley Hall (1769-1825); by descent to Reverend Ayscough Fawkes, Farnley Hall (ca. 1806-1871); his estate sale, Christie's (London), 27 June 1890, lot 32; purchased there by Fine Art Society (London); Lindsey Fleming, Aldwick Grange, Sussex (b. 1887); William Wycliffe Spooner, Ilkley (1882-1967); Spooner Bequest 1967
