Jonathan Skelton was one of the earliest of British watercolourists to work in Rome, arriving there in 1757. With its strange assortment of buildings, this imaginary Italianate view may have been inspired by Tivoli and its environs, where Skelton sketched after nature. Centrally placed trees divide the vista in two, their spindly trunks and speckled foliage a characteristic feature of his work.
