This drawing is one of many by Rowlandson featuring carts and country folk. His figures are stereotyped rustic characters, often simply drawn, as here. Rowlandson enlivens the scene with two figure groups, one standing behind a humble cottage and another heading off to market, all seemingly engrossed in conversation.

Notes

The costume of the woman with a bundle of sticks under her arm suggests a date after 1800, and a similar figure with almost identical dress and bonnet, bare-footed and also carrying sticks, appears in 'A Country Scene with Peasants at a Cottage Door' dated 1805 (Boston Public Library) (see Spooner 2005 catalogue, no. 37).
