Following the outbreak of war with revolutionary France in 1793, English troops led by the Duke of York were active in the Low Countries with the armies of the First Coalition. Fighting resulted in a French victory at Fleurus on 26 June 1794. Earlier Rowlandson had crossed to Holland where he was able to draw the soldiers on the march. Tall trees divide the English troops from the Dutch civilians standing near their houses, the stoic burghers looking on dispassionately.
