Thomas Rowlandson’s frequent trips to the West Country resulted in many Cornish and Devon watercolours. These are often quite generalised in appearance, even when the location is identified, as it is here. Strict topographical accuracy was not the artist’s main concern. The wooded view, with mill and rushing river, clapper bridge, rustic figures and a packhorse, is composed in a picturesque manner and worked in the artist’s characteristic tinted drawing method.
