In eighteenth-century England, as wild boar became extinct and stags were confined to remote areas or gentlemen's parks, fox hunting developed as a major sport. A whole genre of pictures grew up concentrating on the excitement of the chase, and also often on issues of social status. In Rowlandson's lively caricature an elegant lady in a feathered hat sails over a gate on her grey mount, while two humble riders follow in her wake. Note the archaic 'rocking horse' stance - the common method of depicting horses at this time.
Notes
Hayes 1972 dated the drawing c. 1790, and the woman's broad-brimmed hat and feather and loose hairstyle are consistent with this date.
