Label Text

Scenes of embarkation and disembarkation appear quite often in Rowlandson’s watercolours. The sea-going vessel to the left of this drawing implies that the ferry house is on the shore of an estuary. Humbly dressed people watch as the ferry boat leaves, crowded with assorted passengers and a horse. One woman stands with arms folded and her breast exposed — a familiar feature of Rowlandson’s depiction of slovenly women.
