Michael Angelo Rooker worked in London as a scene painter at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket. In the 1790s he regularly exhibited topographical watercolours which were the product of summer walking tours. In general he sought out ancient ruins rather than scenery for its own sake, but here the emphasis is on the mountainous landscape; the remains of the thirteenth-century castle of Dinas Bran are barely visible on the distant hill, the steepness of which Rooker greatly exaggerates.
