Nicholas Pocock, best known for his marine painting, was a founder member of the Society of Painters in Watercolours. With his combination of topographical and nautical interest, he has united both landscape and ships in this river view. Smoke billowing, probably from a lime kiln, and labourers at work add an industrial note to an otherwise rural scene. Pocock’s characteristic treatment of foliage is evident from the trees and vegetation which border the scene.
