Label Text

Born in Vevey, Switzerland, the artist lived in London for ten years, where he studied with Paul Sandby, exhibiting at the Society of Artists under the name of Charles Brandoin. On his return to Switzerland, he painted views for the growing number of Grand Tour travellers on their way to or from Italy. This drawing shows the village of Sallanches on the River Arves, with ancient humped-back bridge and idealised rustic figures, viewed from the west of Mont Blanc.
