Following his visionary phase in the Kentish village of Shoreham, Palmer turned to other types of countryside for inspiration and his work became more naturalistic. Between 1834 and 1859 he paid at least four visits to Devon, for him ‘the loveliest of lands’. In this unfinished watercolour the wooded gorge is described in exquisite detail. Rapid scribbles with a pencil and point of the brush, and inscriptions such as ‘Nightingale’, indicate that Palmer sketched the scene on the spot.
Notes
Included in Lister's 1988 catalogue raisonne of Palmer, where he attributes this to Palmer's first trip to Devon in 1834.
