This work was sketched in the autumn of 1842 on the last of Müller’s numerous trips to Wales. Around this time he wrote, ‘I am more than ever convinced in the actual necessity of looking at nature with a more observant eye than the mass of young artists do, and in particular skies.’ Sketched on the spot, the work would have been completed in a few hours, Müller’s robust handling and generalised forms reflecting his determination to capture the essential qualities of the scene.
