Philippe de Loutherbourg, elected a Royal Academician in 1781, was employed as a stage designer at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. He made many studies of marine life, including shores, ships and sailors. This view of Ramsgate harbour, with its stage-like foreground and backdrop of choppy waters and billowing sails, captures vividly his natural sense of theatre. The lively treatment of figures is echoed in the work of Thomas Rowlandson.
