Thomas Jones’ memoirs of his visit to Italy between 1776 and 1783 provide valuable information on the circle of British artists, including John Robert Cozens, Francis Towne and John ‘Warwick’ Smith, whose company he enjoyed in and around Rome and Naples. Jones made sketching trips along the Gulf of Salerno in 1778 and 1780. In this rocky coastal view, he seamlessly integrates the massive tower into its natural surroundings. Inscribed pencil notes indicate that the drawing was made on the spot.
