Solicitor to Covent Garden Theatre, Thomas Theodosius Forrest was also a successful amateur artist. He sketched in the evenings with brothers Paul and Thomas Sandby at their Poulteney Street lodgings and was aware of Canaletto’s Thames panoramas of the late 1740s and early 1750s. Paul Sandby’s influence is evident in the groups of figures, strategically placed to focus the eye on St Paul’s Cathedral.
Notes
The influence of Paul and Thomas Sandby is evident in Forrest’s use of watercolour, particularly in washes of colour with undefined borders.
