This watercolour was made on Abbott’s one major tour outside his native Devon. Strict topographical accuracy has been abandoned in order to enhance the rugged grandeur of the scene. The unnaturally high mountains, glassy water and piercing shaft of light on the bank attempt to induce a sensation of the sublime. A pencil inscription on the back reading ‘Light from L. Morning’ suggests that the work was initially sketched on the spot.
