In the eighteenth-century, the East India Company patronised artists who would make the journey to India to document their travels. Among the most important topographers of India were Thomas Daniell (1749-1840) and his nephew William, who joined him in 1785. Their major work was Oriental Scenery (1795-1808), containing 144 aquatints, most of which they engraved after their drawings. This watercolour of Hurdwar dates from their first tour up-country from Calcutta.
Notes
Drawn on Daniell's first tour with his uncle Thomas Daniell from Calcutta in August 1788 and reaching Hurdwar on 4 April 1789.
