This drawing of trees is one of a substantial number of such studies Abbott drew in the immediate vicinity of his native Exeter. Like his teacher and neighbour, Francis Towne, Abbott frequently sketched in the grounds of Peamore House. Although this drawing is meticulous, his preoccupation is with the pattern of light and shade provided by their canopies rather than a study of trees as an identifiable species.
