Wide-angled beach scenes with large skies were a common theme in David Cox’s work. Their treatment was greatly inspired by a visit to Calais in 1829 where he readily absorbed the light and atmosphere of sea and sand. This composition relates to a finished oil of Blackpool seafront (Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, c.1840) and to a watercolour sketch (Private collection). Pencil inscriptions not in the artist’s hand, and somewhat blotchy handling, suggest that this drawing could be a copy by an amateur artist after Cox’s sketch.
