Constable was born in East Bergholt, Suffolk, and the village church features more often in his work than any other subject. In July 1817 he spent ten weeks with his wife Maria at his old home. The detailed precision of this drawing suggests that it was sketched on the site, at around five o'clock according to the tower clock face.
This drawing is unusual in its size and finish, as the artist preferred to make small on-the-spot studies in sketchbooks. It is a remarkable example of draughtsmanship, skilfully using light and shade (produced with a combination of hard and soft graphite pencils) to emphasize the textures and patterns of crumbling masonry and decorative architectural motifs.

Provenance

by descent to Charles Golding Constable (1821-1879); his estate sale at Christie's (London), 11 July 1887, lot 23; purchased there by Thomas Agnew & Sons (London) on behalf of Sir William Cuthbert Quilter (1841-1911); Percy Moore Turner, London (ca. 1877-1951); Gilbert Davis (1899-1983), L.757a (former mount); purchased from him by Colnaghi (London), 26 April 1956; purchased there by William Wycliffe Spooner, Ilkley (1882-1967), 5 June 1956 (£125); Spooner Bequest 1967
