Trade with India and the Far East and the popularity of topographical engravings gave rise to increasing public interest in these unfamiliar locations, and provided artists with new patrons among the British merchants and administrators resident there. Between 1802 and 1825 George Chinnery worked in India as a successful portrait painter. A swift and accomplished draughtsman, his pencil studies of village life are numerous. This unfinished sketch, with broadly applied washes running into each other, shows all the signs of being done on the spot.
Provenance
D.M.L., April 1955? (see file for inscription, now no longer visible); perhaps Fine Art Society (London), where titled 'Oriental Coastal Scene'; if so, then purchased there by Mr and Mrs William Wycliffe Spooner, Ilkley (1882-1967), 1960; Spooner Bequest 1967
