This peaceful river view with wooded banks, church spires and tower was probably painted somewhere in northern Europe where Vickers travelled in 1833, en route to Russia to prepare drawings for engraved plates for Charles Heath’s Picturesque Annual. His use of browns, greens, greys and pale blue is typical of his narrow colour range, while the touches of red, used as a counterpoint to the cool tones of the landscape in the middle distance, show the influence of Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-1828).
