Book of Hours

Label Text

Books of Hours were used in private prayer, usually by lay people, and often contained as their central text the Hours of the Virgin Mary, a shorter version of the devotional prayers performed at eight set points during the day by religious orders and the clergy. Each of the nine folios contains a new text in Latin, preceded by a miniature, including scenes from the life of Mary.
