Inscriptions
Watermark: Watermark: unable to check due to backing card.
Inscription: Backing card (historic), Recto: on separate strip of paper cut from the original sheet laid down onto lower edge that protrudes beyond the drawing sheet (apparently moved after 1968 from the back of the former mount, now missing), brown ink, artist's hand: "virgilio libro ottava venera da l'arma a Enea Claudio Fecit / Rome 1670". Backing card (historic), Verso: lower left, graphite, apparently rewriting a pen-and-brown-ink inscription in Esdaile's hand now cut off by the handling edges: "1836 WE Eneas receiving his Armour from Venus". Former mount, removed and now missing but recorded in file: “This drawing by Claude bought at Dr. / Wellesley’s sale June 29. 1866 for Two / guineas it is numbered 840 in / the Catalogue”.
Collector's mark: Recto: lower left, stamped in black ink: Jonathan Richardson the elder (L.2184); lower left corner, blindstamped: Sir Thomas Lawrence (L.2445); lower left edge, pen and brown ink: William Esdaile (L.2617). Backing card (historic), Verso: upper right edge: John Barnard (L.1420), with his number cut off at the edge but with the dimensions "9 1/2 by 6 3/4".
