Inscription: Letter, mounted with the sketchbook, graphite: “(To be kept) 320 of CGr [?] / Pocket Sketch Book / left by Wilson Steer / the great artist to his friend + / artist JMacdonald who gave it / to me. CL Townley.”. Letter, mounted with sketchbook, black ink: “Speedwell Cottage / Tewin Wood / Herts- / 18th Dec 1945 / Dear Townley, / Herewith is another / Tom Thumb. + heading + I hope / they are alright. / With this I send you in place of / a Christmas card a little sketch / book of Wilson Steer's two of which / were given to me with his water / colour box + brushes by his executors. / It is of the period when he + Sickert / worked together (Camden Town I think). / + the contents are little notes he made / at a music hall, which I thought / would make it have an added interest / for you. / Anyway I send it with my best wishes / for Christmas + the new Year + as / an acknowledgment of much kindness. / Yours very sincerely / JMacdonald”.
