This is a variant proposal for a massive chapel at Greenwich. 'Elevations' are directly frontal views, projected onto a single vertical plane, parallel to the picture plane. They can show an existing, or, as in this case, proposed building; they usually contain little or no suggestion of depth. Drawn to scale they enable the architect to study the geometric proportions of a building, although they are not easily read by non-architects.
Provenance
John Edmund Gardner (1819-1899); by descent to his son; purchased from him en bloc by Major Sir Edward Coates (1853-1921), 1910; his estate sale, Sotheby's (London), 1-5 May 1924, probably lot 2232 (18 items); purchased there by B.T. Batsford (London) (£5.5 for all 18); purchased there by Professor Geoffrey Webb (1898-1970), circa 1927-28; Webb Gift 1960 Provenance detailed by Kerry Downes in the file for D.1961.XX.2.1.

Watermark: Watermark: Recto, centre: "IHS / IVILLEDARY" [Several generations of papermakers called Jean Villedary operated in Vraichamp, Beauvais and La Couronne mills in the Angoumois from 1668 to 1758 (Churchill 1935, p. 21.). Although Villedary worked the mills from 1668, the use of the full name, rather than the IV initials appears to date from the 1690s (Voorn 1960, p. 542).]
