Hawksmoor designed at least three different schemes for a chapel at Greenwich, to be built south of the main naval hospital buildings. This and the drawing to the right represent two of these schemes, each drawn using different conventions of architectural draughtsmanship; this adheres less strictly to the conventions of elevation, since there is some suggestion of depth and a light source.
Notes
The chapel is designed to bridge the London-Dover road. An almost exact duplicate drawing is in the Clarke Collection, Worcester College, Oxford.
Provenance
John Edmund Gardner (1819-1899); by descent to his son; purchased from him en bloc by Major Sir Edward Coates (1853-1921), 1910; his estate sale, Sotheby's (London), 1-5 May 1924, probably lot 2232 (18 items); purchased there by B.T. Batsford (London) (£5.5 for all 18); purchased there by Professor Geoffrey Webb (1898-1970), circa 1927-28; Webb Gift 1960 Provenance detailed by Kerry Downes in the file for D.1961.XX.2.1.
