The ancient town of Tivoli, north-east of Rome, was a popular destination for tourists and artists in the 18th century. Flemish painter Gaspar van Wittel probably executed this landscape study in situ, before taking it back to the studio where he squared it for transfer. It relates to several of his paintings.

Notes

A study for the left section of an oil painting in a private collection in Viterbo, dated by Briganti to 1700-10, of 'View of Tivoli and the Temple of Vesta'. A sketch for the central section is in Washington (Rust Collection). This sheet depicts the outskirts of the town on the right, the plain of the Porta Sant'Angelo, and beginnings of the Via Valeria advancing along the foothills of Monte Catillo on the left.

Provenance

Bartolommeo Cavaceppi (ca. 1716-1799); Michelangelo Pacetti, Rome (b. 1793); Paul Fatio, Geneva (1874-1960?); Wynne Jeudwine (London), May - June 1961, no. 30; purchased there by The Courtauld via the Witt Fund (£225)
