The loose, painterly handling and extensive areas of bare paper make it likely that this drawing represents an early stage in the design process. The bright colour and rhythmic composition have an almost musical quality. They show similarities with the abstract paintings of the Russian artist Vassily Kandinsky, who then exhibited frequently in London. Such designs reveal the Omega Workshops’ engagement with the cutting edge of contemporary art and their determination to rupture the boundaries between painting and decoration.
