This rug design is formed of a symmetrical base of intersecting planes, overlaid with short black parallel lines. The density of the design is lifted by allowing the white paper below to remain visible. Etchells, a founding member of the Omega Workshops, collaborated closely with Grant during its early years before he left to join the rival Rebel Art Centre. He expressed his enthusiasm for geometric forms in a letter to Fry, writing: ‘I am trying to really understand planes. It gets into quite a passion’.
