The Courtauld holds three drawings based on this design, which show the consecutive stages of the elaboration of a rug, with this sheet thought to be the third and most carefully worked out in the sequence. On the back of the sheet, the artist has noted the various specifications for the rug, including the number of knots per foot. The front contains colour annotations. Though the inscriptions imply the design may have been seen by the manufacturer, there is no indication that the rug was ever made.
