Nina Hamnett worked on decorative schemes for several Omega interiors. The austerity of the room shown here reflects an aspect of Bloomsbury taste, which also informed Roger Fry's pre-war design of his own house, Durbins, in Surrey. Fry's walls at Durbins and those of the Omega Workshops themselves were likewise mainly grey. A more familiar view of Bloomsbury taste, characteristic of a later date, is illustrated by the homely clutter of Charleston farmhouse, now open to the public, where every object was covered with lively decoration.
The interior shown by Nina Hamnett is furnished with a red-painted dining chair topped by the Omega symbol. On the chimney-piece are two large vases of a type of which the only known surviving example is also on display here. Standing in the fireplace is the Elephant Tray, designed by Duncan Grant and on sale at the Omega from November 1913. It was a popular design, and several copies were made, George Bernard Shaw buying one. The presence of this tray reminds one of the sense of fun, which was an essential ingredient of the early days of the Omega.
