The Omega Workshops were engaged in a number of pacifist activities. This caricature of a military officer, possibly German or central European, may relate to their pacifist campaigns, rather than simply being a playful toy design. The Omega’s use of toys to caricature military leaders was publicly demonstrated at the Allied Dolls Show at the Grafton Galleries in 1914. There, Roger Fry exhibited a number of carved wooden dolls, which he had designed as caricatures of the Kaiser and the Crown Prince, among others.
