In 1913, Fry invited Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell to be co-directors as well as contributors of the Omega Workshops. Based at 33 Fitzroy Square, Bloomsbury, the Workshops held a portfolio of reference designs that could be used by artists to decorate different types of objects. This rectangular design was made without a particular surface in mind, but was later adapted to suit the round format of a tray. The frieze-like figures may have been inspired by The Trojan Women, a tragedy written by the ancient Greek playwright Euripides.
