This castanet dancer stands on the points of her feet in a similar posture to The Dancing Master (also in the Gallery’s collection), and shows a further stage in Gill’s experimentation with the actions of her toy designs. Here, the arm is conceived as a separate piece which rotates around the body. The elaborately drawn flowing ribbon conveys a powerful sense of movement and makes for a beautiful and evocative composition.
