Label Text

The application of strips of coloured paper on the sheet was inspired by the Omega artists’ investigation of Cubist collages. Here, opaque orange paper contrasts with a delicate purple wash and flat planes of opaque watercolour. As well as providing texture, collage is a convenient way to cover a darker colour with a lighter one. Duncan Grant used similar short black parallel lines in another rug he designed for the Ideal Home Exhibition in 1913, also in The Courtauld's collection, making it likely that he was also the creator of this work.
