The application of strips of coloured paper on the sheet was inspired by the Omega artists’ investigation of Cubist collages. Here, opaque orange paper contrasts with a delicate purple wash and flat plains of gouache paint. As well as providing texture, collage is a convenient way to cover a darker colour with a lighter one. The short, black parallel lines in this narrow rug design are also used to striking effect in the rug Grant designed for the Ideal Home Exhibition in 1913, also in The Courtauld's collection.
